Neck pain has a number of different causes and can be related to a wide variety of issues. Sometimes it can be treated with physical therapy or pain management, and other times it requires more extensive surgical procedures. At Trinity Orthopedics, our providers believe that you should be part of the team. It’s your body. You deserve to know what’s going on so that you can actively participate in the planning of your treatment. That’s why we put such a heavy emphasis on patient education. If you’re experiencing neck pain, we can help. However, there are some things you can do for yourself to relieve neck pain that you might never have thought of.
1. Try a water pillow.
For some patients, water pillows have rejuvenating effects that help to relieve pain. This is because they allow you to adjust how firm the pillow is. This is a good tip for patients who have tried a lot of neck pillows that simply don’t cut it.
2. Go swimming.
Swimming can have a number of different therapeutic effects on the back and neck. It reduces inflammation, exercises your range of movement, and provides fast pain relief. A good exercise to relieve neck pain is submerging yourself in the water until it’s up to your chin and moving in different directions. Don’t have access to a pool? Taking a bath every night can have a similar therapeutic effect.
3. Get a massage.
Specifically, try a remedial massage. The difference with these massages is that oil is applied to the skin so that it can penetrate muscles and joints, removing toxins and relaxing the muscles. This is also good for improving joint mobility.
4. Give acupuncture a shot.
Acupuncture in certain areas can provide varying levels of neck pain relief. How effective it is, much like a massage, tends to be in the hands of the practitioner. Before trying it, take the time to research it so that you can recognize someone with the right skills.
5. Check your magnesium intake.
Most cases of neck pain come from strain and sprains. Magnesium helps your muscles contract and relax, so a supplement or the right diet can relieve neck pain. Magnesium is commonly found in soy products, beans, vegetables, and nuts.
